Baby wake windows are useful clues, not a contract. They can help tired adults notice when the next sleep might be close, but they should never overrule feeding needs, illness, safe sleep, or the tired signs your baby is showing in front of you.

A wake window is the time your baby is awake between one sleep and the next. It usually includes feeding, nappy changes, cuddles, floor play, outings, wind-down, and the final settling steps. It is not a challenge to keep a baby awake for a target number of minutes.
Those ranges are deliberately broad because babies are not clocks. A short nap, early morning, vaccine day, childcare handover, hot weather, teething, illness, feeding trouble, travel, or a busy room can make a baby tired earlier than the average chart suggests.
Newborn wake windows should stay very gentle. Many newborn days are a loop of feed, nappy, cuddle, and sleep, with little or no play between some feeds. Use light and ordinary household sound during the day, dim quiet care overnight, and put safe sleep steps ahead of keeping a newborn awake for a schedule.
Reduce stimulation when tired signs start. Move to the usual sleep space, put toys away, speak quietly, dim lights, close curtains if helpful, and use the same short wind-down. Some babies need only a few minutes; others need more time after a loud room, visitors, or a missed nap.
Feeding and solids can change the rhythm without becoming sleep fixes. A hungry baby may not settle, and an overtired baby may feed poorly. Around solids, keep meals supervised and responsive, but do not use cereal in bottles, unsafe textures, or a heavy dinner as a shortcut for night waking.
