Some families choose to share pregnancy news around this time because the chance of miscarriage decreases after entering the second trimester. That does not mean you have to announce anything before you are ready. A quiet plan for who to tell, what help you want, and how much privacy you need can be more useful than copying someone else's timeline.
Your own energy may start to come back in these weeks, and morning sickness may ease. Some people notice a more obvious bump, larger breasts, early colostrum, new moles or skin tags, or sleep that is disrupted by a changing body. Light to moderate exercise is often supported in uncomplicated pregnancies if it fits your previous activity level, but ask your doctor or midwife what is appropriate for you.
Screening follow-up often matters in this slice. If you did not have first-trimester screening and want it, your doctor or midwife may discuss second-trimester maternal serum screening from about 15 weeks. If a diagnostic test such as amniocentesis is recommended after screening results, family history, age, or carrier status, it is usually a specialist discussion rather than a routine step for everyone.
You might begin to feel the baby move around week 16, especially if this is not your first pregnancy, but many parents will not notice anything for a few more weeks. Early movements can feel like flutters, bubbles, or tiny taps. If you have not felt movement by 24 weeks, contact your doctor or midwife, and later in pregnancy always seek advice promptly if an established movement pattern changes.
Backache, pelvic strain, leg cramps, varicose veins, constipation, heartburn, headaches, sleep disruption, and emotional swings can all sit inside the normal range, but normal does not mean unsupported. Ask about safe pain relief, hydration, movement, stretching, sleep positions, pelvic floor exercises, work adjustments, and when a symptom should be checked.
Antenatal care may feel quieter after the first appointment rush, but it is still doing work. Routine visits can include blood pressure, general wellbeing, questions about symptoms, test results, baby's heartbeat when appropriate, and discussion of upcoming scans or checks. The 18 to 22 week morphology scan is not usually in this slice yet, but weeks 13 to 16 are a good time to book it, organise transport, and write down questions.
